We've all seen the flawlessly semantic blog sites on the internet. They're beautiful. They're perfect. They're absolutely rubbing it in my face that I can't pull that off quite as well as they can. So I made a list of things I might want to do with the main page of the site (the rest of it I'm liking as it is, a few tweaks here and there to make sure things are perfect).
Changes I've made
Really nothing, other than a little reorganization. I changed my <h1> to lowercase and bold just because it reflects a little better the style of my header. Well, don't get me wrong. I love capitalizing as much as anyone. But for the minute, I'm running between wanting to punch Emmy Rossum or absolutely praise her during The Point Of No Return (The Phantom of the Opera). That much makes my changes concrete.
- Create a
<div>and make my header image a background image. Perhaps float the name of the site over, if it works out. If not, a background image is perfect. - Move the navigation to the left? Most sites have entries on the right and the navigation on the left. It's either that or move the navigation to the bottom — I tried this today and...it kind of blew up in my face. I found myself missing the familiarity of my site. One thing I want to do is resize the "feature" image to something small, or something more discreet, perhaps even removing it from the main page. Once I create a beautiful portfolio at Carbonmade.com (EDIT: Not doing this quite yet), I can move a lot of my links around.
- Clean up the warnings in my CSS file. It might validate, but I got rid of the warnings in Paramour — I can do it in this too. Seeing as my site has a white background for visibility, it shouldn't be hard at all to edit through it. While I'm at that, I can get rid of my packrat tendencies.
- Do some better organization of my stories. You guys don't need to read background information and "extras" on each story. You just want to read it, am I right? (If I had written "write" instead of "right", I honestly wouldn't have noticed).
- Make sure each page of my site loads in under 1 second and make sure my main content appears before my navigation in the source. It'll take a little work but I can pull it off. I have KARMAPOWER :)
Oh yeah, and before I stop listing goals, a note to myself:
- FINISH WRITING THE GOD-DAMN BOOK, YOU MOFO
Jesus, just listening to U2 for a minute makes me want to work my face off. THANK YOU BONO <3
